As the old saying goes, “gardening adds years to your life and life to your years,” and we couldn’t agree more.
It doesn’t matter if you want to grow begonias and petunias to enjoy all summer, or if you’re going for snap beans, corn, squash, and lima beans, you can rest assured that your green thumb and love of gardens can thrive here at Spring Harbor.
Residents experience gardening at their own pace. Whether it’s digging in the dirt in a personal spot at the neighborhood garden, planting in small but flashy containers, or visiting local gardens with like-minded friends, we have you covered. Here are a few ways we encourage residents to come grow with us:
Join in the fun at the Neighborhood Garden at Spring Harbor:
Just because you no longer have a yard doesn’t mean you have to give up your gardening hobby. We provide the space and materials for gardeners — and as a result, both plants and people flourish here.
Cooperative gardening is good for the spirit. Our gardens encourage residents to come together, tend to the plants and share in the bountiful harvest. It’s fun and productive, plus you can make new friends. Spend time outdoors in the sunshine and join others who share the same interest. Grow flowers, herbs or vegetables, whatever you like. Liven up your home with a weekly fresh cut bouquet, brew some mint tea, or try fresh lavender to calm your nerves. With an endless variety of plants, residents choose whatever they want to do.
Show off your container gardens, window boxes and hanging baskets:
If you’re not too keen on gardening in the ground (with weeds and worms), but you like to have plants around, try a container garden. Several residents showcase beautiful flowers outside their homes for everyone to enjoy. Other residents splash out with showy box gardens or flowery baskets hanging from their balconies and/or outside their apartments. Resident services always promote contests like door décor, fresh flower arrangements and blooms, and they’ve also been known to host a few Tea Parties in the garden.
Enjoy being a field-tripping, sightseeing garden lover:
Of course you don’t have to be an actual gardener to enjoy seeing the fresh blooms and colors of springtime, so excursions and field trips are on the schedule. Groups of residents look forward to the Botanical Gardens each year for their spring exhibitions and festivals. Residents also visit the Callaway Gardens for the Azalea festival and visit local conservatory land in SW Georgia to see lilies.
